Big Smile

If I'm ever offensively wealthy, one of my main extravagances will be new socks. Every single day. There's nothing that will set you on your feet going in the right direction in the morning quite like pulling on a perfect soft virgin pair of socks. It wouldn't even cost much more than Starbucks.

Fake Whitewater

So I spent the morning paddling on the Charles river in my new Inflatable Kayak. I left my bike at MIT, then rode the T to Harvard and put in where the riverebank is a flat park that goes right down to the water. These two nice ladies watched from a bench nearby, fascinated, as I got my pump out and inflated, then hopped into the river. Once I got down to the basin, the wind kicked up, and there was a pretty good chop. I felt intrepid in my little yellow boat, buffeted by the waves, as I made my way over to the MIT sailing pavilion. They told me I could get out there, but only if I promised not to go back in, since it was getting stormy. Those sailing guys are great... they simultaneuosly affirmed my daring journey and looked out for my safety. I should probably grow out my beard.

One of those nights

Ever have an evening when you just aren't feeling it? I just got up and left all my friends at the Cambridge Brewing Compnay where we were all going to have dinner. I could feel from the onset that this was going to be one of those evenings out where you're just waiting it out until you can leave. So I did, right away. there's still 15 people, so it isn't as if I ruined the night right? Can't a fella just have a friday night where he wants an egg sandwich and to be left alone? That's tonight.

Let me tell you a little story....

... about what happens when Theis is left without supervision.

I'll be the new owner of this beauty just as soon as the package gets here from New Jersey.

Talking to the walls

Everyone has gone! In the last few months, two post-docs have left my research group, both of the older grad students are staying home to write thesis chapters, and the new kid hasn't moved in yet. Today Micah left for Texas to get married, and Zubair left for Pakistan to see his family. He returns when the US lets him back in. That leaves lonely ol' me, sitting quietly at my desk listening to the Chinese crystal growth post-doc on the other side of the cube divider make whale noises. These freaky low moans are coming from over there, so I'm trying to type as noisily as possible. Maybe he'll stop. Also, he brings in food that smells like canned Purina at least 3 times a week. Please come back, groupmates.

Who owns an island?

I went on a bike safari through Southie yesterday. I was trying to ride out to the Harbor Islands that are connected to the mainland by a causeway. I had researched this via satellite imagery. I made it through the gritty industrial whatever, and as soon as I was about to hit the bridge, I got derailed by a rent-a-cop. Turns out the Harbor Islands are all private property. Who has enough money to own an island in Boston Harbor, and then still has enough left over to get a bridge built to it?

$12 toy reinvigorates $200 toy!

I bought a little tripod for my little camera, and now I have the freedom to play with the aperture. Same shot, different weather. I don't actually know anything at all about photography.
