Happy August

Grad school is over, and I couldn't be happier. It took a couple of weeks of sitting around the house in a catatonic state to realize that I was actually on vacation during the week too, but now I'm leaving town whenever I damn well please. Woot.
Last Wednesday I got up early and rode my bike from home to Ptown, then took the fast ferry home. Little bit longer a journey than I originally thought, but the cape is mighty nice this time of year. I arrived in Ptown after 150 miles covered in road grime and bone-tired, but happy to see the world's most permanent outdoor gay-themed carnival and art market. I bought a sweet pair of sweatpants that say "Provincetown" down the leg so I wouldn't freeze or offend people on the boat. There is no point to this story.

Well if Julie's climbing back up on the Pony....

I suppose I ought to also.

But what to post?

I'll tell you what: I'm 27 years old, and I've never in my life had a real professional job. I have never been married, never had a kid, never owned anything larger and more expensive than a bicycle. in a sense, I have my whole life yet in front of me. Everything up until now has been a sort of unbelievably long, drawn out adolescence. and yet. The only thing I really want, apart from a subaru station wagon, is to be old, have hair sprouting from my ears, and sit on my porch swing complaining about the world. I want to be a curmudgeon. These damn kids with their shoes with wheels on them and their rap music. Get a job, hippie!

Ooohh I can't wait!

James Sherley, We Hardly Knew Ye --

"I will either see the Provost resign and my hard-earned tenure granted at MIT, or I will die defiantly right outside his office," -- James Sherley, Feb. 5th

Today:

Dear colleagues:

As MIT observes its Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration today, I want to thank my supporters and other sympathizers of my hunger strike outside of the offices of the President and Provost. I am ending this part of my struggle. Starting today, I will in fact break my fast, in celebration of the attention that has been brought to bear on issues of equity, diversity, and justice at MIT and in higher education. Carefully modified from the original, my demands are still on the table. I urge the administration to act in good faith, to openly acknowledge and respond to the lines of communication and negotiation that have been in place for two weeks and to find its way to meet these demands.

Sincerely yours,

James L. Sherley

Sorry Lena

There's some photo thievery going on here, but I felt like it was incumbent upon me to make sure that this picture of Jake gets a wider distribution. It's not everyday you find a nice shot of your roommate holding Mr. Pineapplehead. Someday there's going to be a bunch of little kids with round eyeglasses running around, and I want to make sure they see this little bit of their father's personal history.

Why I prefer good ol' brick construction

I gotta be honest here, I don't see as much damage to the front of this SUV as I'd like to were I the owner of the building in question.Maybe it's time to rethink locating a cinema in a converted pole barn....

Valentine's Day Nor'Easter

If there was ever a reason to expect a glut of babies in the middle of November, this is it.
